He was unendingly polite and always somehow found a creative path to describe an over- the-hill bottle in a positive light. In all the years I knew him, I never heard him utter an insult or slight. That’s simply who he was. He had a highly successful career and embraced an enviable range of outside interests including humanitarian causes. His adventures led him to sail the seas, ski the slopes, drive race cars and fl y planes. Clearly he also cherished great wines. Above all else he was deeply passionate about his wife and family. As for the wines, they were all meticulously sourced upon release and carefully stored in a customized and temperature-controlled home cellar. He was deeply focused on the best of the best from France and California. There’s a trove of fi rst growth Bordeaux, much of which was acquired as futures from HDH, along with a staggering bounty of DRC, featuring fourteen vintages of Romanée-Conti and eight vintages of Montrachet, along with deep pockets of Harlan and Screaming Eagle.
