RYDER Wine and food have been fi xtures in Thomas O. Ryder’s life for six decades, beginning with weekend escapes to Napa Valley when he lived and worked in the bay area. Originally hailing from Louisiana, Mr. Ryder was for many years a publishing industry executive. While at American Express in the early 1980s Mr. Ryder revitalized the then- fl agging Food & Wine Magazine, creating the popular modern iteration of the publication and eventually founding the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. A writer himself, Tom has penned articles in publications such as Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, Reader’s Digest, and Barron’s. Tom retired as Chairman and CEO of The Reader’s Digest Association Inc. in the mid-2000s but has continued to serve on the boards of major media and technology organizations. Now living between Connecticut and Florida with his wife Darlene, Tom oversees the wine selections at his family’s provisions store and relishes the challenge of fi nding delicious wines at modest prices. Representing Mr. Ryder’s decades-long journey through the world of wine, the collection includes Napa Valley legends from Dominus, Heitz, Joseph Phelps and Ridge, ventures through the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux, then takes up residence in Burgundy. The showcase of the collection is a staggering array of Leroy spanning 1988-2015 — 1990 Vosne-Romanée, Beaux Monts Leroy was the Ryder house wine back when you could buy it for $30 a bottle! — and also includes grand crus from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Armand Rousseau, Georges Roumier, Faiveley and Comte Georges de Vogüé. Wines from Mr. Ryder were also off ered in HDH’s August Auction of Fine and Rare Wines. The collection was held in purpose-built, climate- controlled home storage and professional wine storage until removal by Hart Davis Hart in June 2025.
